Geographical Indications

What is a Geographical Indication?

A geographical indication is a sign that is applied to products from a specific area with notable characteristics. For example, 'Champagne' is a famous geographical indication. Only sparkling white wine that originates from the Champagne region in France can be sold as 'Champagne'. In 2017, Montserrat Hills was designated a geographical indication for cocoa produced in that region of Trinidad and Tobago.
